Pathfinders
A Shared Journey in Policing, Culture, and Leadership
Every agency has a destination. The journey is stronger with trusted traveling companions.
Pathfinders brings forward-thinking policing leaders and agency members together to exchange ideas, challenge assumptions, and learn from one another as they navigate the path toward healthier cultures and stronger leadership. Through honest conversation, organizational reflection, and shared learning, participants explore where they’ve been, where they are, and where they’re going—advancing the profession together.
Designed as a facilitated yet informal three-day exchange, Pathfinders creates space for meaningful connection and candid dialogue across agencies. It is a collaboration, not a showcase. Each agency contributes its experiences, questions, successes, and challenges. The value comes from a willingness to share unfinished work, examine assumptions, and learn alongside others.
Pathfinders reflects The Curve’s commitment to supporting leaders who are actively working to evolve their organizational cultures and develop the next generation of leaders. At its core is a shared belief that healthy police cultures grow through intentional leadership, care for people, and a continuing commitment to learning.
A Simple but Powerful Framework
Pathfinders is built around three connected questions: understanding where we’ve been, examining where we are, and intentionally shaping where we’re going.
Day One: Understanding Where We’ve Been
The first day sets the tone by prioritizing connection and trust. Introductions, informal conversations, and shared reflection help participants build relationships and establish a foundation for candid dialogue.
Each agency explores the origins of its organizational culture, reflecting on formative experiences, pivotal moments, and leadership approaches that have shaped its identity. Participants consider how those influences continue to affect their people, practices, and relationships with the community.
Together, the group examines which elements of policing culture should be preserved and which may need to evolve—learning from the past while identifying opportunities to build healthier, more adaptive organizations.
Day Two: Examining Where We Are
The second day focuses on the present state of each agency and the practices influencing its culture, effectiveness, and community trust. Participants share programs, strategies, and everyday leadership behaviors that are making a difference, along with challenges they are still working to address.
Conversations explore how organizational values translate into action through member wellness, community engagement, operational practices, and care for people. Agencies discuss what they have tried, what they have learned, and how those lessons might inform another organization’s approach.
Direct engagement with agency members across roles and assignments adds depth to the exchange. These conversations offer an honest look at how culture is experienced throughout an organization—what is working, where gaps remain, and how leaders can support continued improvement.
Day Three: Envisioning Where We’re Going
The final day turns toward the future, focusing on each agency’s vision and the choices that will guide its path forward. Participants explore leadership development, organizational growth, and how to prepare their agencies for the evolving needs of their members and communities.
Discussions consider how feedback, emotional intelligence, mentorship, and intentional development can help build effective leaders. A central theme is expanding a leader’s capacity to care for people while fulfilling the responsibilities of command.
Participants reflect on what they have learned, identify practical next steps, and explore opportunities for continued collaboration. The experience closes with a clearer sense of direction and relationships that can support the work ahead.
Advancing the Profession Together
Pathfinders brings together agencies willing to learn openly, reflect honestly, and contribute to one another’s growth. Its purpose extends beyond exchanging ideas: it builds trusted relationships that help leaders turn learning into action.
Participants leave with fresh perspectives, practical possibilities, and a network of colleagues committed to building healthier organizations and strengthening the profession.
