One-by-One Policing

Though there are many accepted practices in policing, there is little to no emphasis placed on what makes a good police culture. And culture directly impacts how officers and deputies feel about their jobs, themselves, the public and how they perform their duties. Modern police leaders must focus more on culture.

Many of the most forward-thinking chiefs and sheriffs are challenging the status quo, doing things differently than they were raised to do as they came up through the ranks. They are changing the culture of their profession inside their own agencies…and seeing remarkable results. Their agencies enjoy higher morale, greater camaraderie, higher levels of innovation and problem solving, stronger relationships with their civilian leadership and communities and better than the national average crime statistics.

Though none of them have all the answers, they all have pieces of the puzzle. We are working to bring those pieces together to help other forward thinking chiefs and sheriffs so that they can also evolve their agencies for the inside-out.

We call this One-by-One policing.

The tenets of One-by-One

  • Shift away from the idea of serving a group or serving the community and focus more on serving individuals, one person at a time. Innovation skyrockets with this mindset.

  • Build a Circle of Safety in order to create a work environment that is both physically and psychologically safe for all team members. Empathy thrives in this kind of environment.

  • When individuals feel seen, heard and understood, the organizations and communities to which they belong are more likely to be seen, heard and understood. Cooperation flourishes under these conditions.

The benefits of One-by-One policing
